Overall
Summary of responses
Faculty feel a greater sense of belonging within their own department, section, or school, compared to the broader Yale community.
By faculty track
Summary of responses
Ladder and instructional faculty respondents report similar experiences. All tracks report a stronger sense of belonging in the home unit than at Yale overall. Research faculty respondents report less experience of belonging overall and especially outside the academic unit.
By gender
Summary of responses
Female, non-binary, and transgender faculty respondents report lesser experiences of belonging overall. The sense of belonging is stronger in the academic unit than at Yale overall.
Note: Categories are not mutually exclusive, as survey respondents were asked to select all answers that apply. Self-identified open-response gender identities are not reported because fewer responses were received than required to maintain confidentiality.
By underrepresented minority (URM) status
Summary of responses
URM faculty respondents report lesser experiences of belonging. The responses are more polarized for URM than non-URM faculty, with higher levels of non-belonging and less neutrality. A deeper view of responses shows variation within and across different academic units: some are highly positive and others highly critical.
Note: URM stands for “underrepresented minority.” See our Data Definitions page for more information.
